Welcome 7-Day Detoxers

I've been away from blogging for a few weeks due to a vacation away from my normal life. my nanny was away for two weeks and i got to spend 2 weeks playing mommy 24/7. I LOVED IT!!

my kids are at such a fun age that they just suck up everything new and exciting. we did different things everyday, explored new places, stayed cool at the pool, lots of bike riding, tried new restaurants and new foods, cooked in the kitchen together, did yoga in the park, slept in later than normal every day, stayed up late playing games, cuddled during the day while we watched fun movies (and educational shows too), made buckwheat pancakes and eggs for breakfast often, painted in the back yard, had fun cleaning out the house from top to bottom (i love getting organized), read almost every book on their summer reading lists, potty-trained owen (almost- he still misses the potty often!!) and sooo much more. the list can go on and on!! i took every opportunity to connect and have fun.

my "work" really never stops its just what type of work i'm doing. over my "vacation" i worked on lots of new recipes for a fabulous project i'm working on. You will all get to taste the final recipes in the near future!!

Today starts another 7-Day Detox Group!! Welcome all detoxers. We have a group of 32 and i'm excited for everyone. The biggest goal for this week is becoming AWARE. becoming aware of your relationship with food and how food affects your mind, body and spirit. The best way to become AWARE is to journal every day. Journal about what you eat, how you eat, how you feel while you are eating, how you feel after you eat, cravings, stress, etc. Just the process of sitting down to write in a journal makes you think about your relationship with food. I suggest you also take it one step further and think about movement too. when i say movement i not only mean exercise such as yoga, running, biking etc but also how you hold yourself, your posture, breathing etc. These things also affect how you digest your food and how you feel mind, body and spirit. So this detox is not only about getting rid of toxins but it is about connecting more with yourself, becoming more aware and making the changes needed to help you reach your healthy living goals.

two foods that are in season now are tomatoes and zucchini. here are two delicious recipes to add to your weekly repertoire using these ingredients:

Zucchini Hummus

1 c peeled and chopped zucchini, firmly packed
3 ½ tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp flaxseed oil
4 cloves garlic
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp salt
¼ tsp cumin
Pinch of cayenne
½ c raw tahini
1/3 cup sesame seeds, soaked for 4 hours, rinsed and drained.

-combine everything but the tahini and sesame seeds and process
-add tahini and sesame seeds and process again
-keeps in refrigerator for 4 days

here is my version of a Green Gazpacho- just try it!!
sorry- no pics of this one. i will make it this week and post a pic.
Ingredients

2 large tomatoes or combo of any type tomato you like
½ large cucumber
1/3 cup basil, packed
¼ tsp salt
Juice of half a lime
juice of 1 lemon
1/4-1/2 ripe avocado (the more the better for me)
1/3 cup water
3 tbsp olive oil or flax or hemp oil
1 tbsp dulse
blend all ingredients in high speed blender. adjust amount of water dependent up consistency you enjoy. garnish with avocado slices and sprinkle of dulse and or basil.

yummy!!

remember- your seven day detox is a journey and not a destination!!

Connecting with my Kids

every day i try to see the world through my kid's eyes. i try to understand why they react the way they do by remembering that their viewpoint of the world is very different from mine. i love to truly connect every day and HEAR what they are saying and SEE what they are seeing. Mason is an amazing 4year old (as every parent says about their kids). he is at a great stage where we have little conversations and he asks the best questions. owen is learning new words everyday and learning how to express himself. i love spending alone time with both kids. today i got to spend a lot of alone time with mason and i loved it. tomorrow i get to be with owen all day.
This morning we started the day with Yoga as usual.
They munched on a variety of things for breakfast including cantaloupe, almond butter, bananas, sprouted grain raw bread and grapes.
next it was art time out back.

later we went to Avery's B-day party which was fabulous. it was at a ballet school but both the girls and boys had a blast. check it out:

they dressed up as princesses and princes:

this was the train to the tea party:

time for tea and cake:

after the party mason and I ventured to bethesda for a little shopping, dinner and ice cream- just mason and i strolling around bethesda holding hands. i will remember these little moments always!! sitting eating ice cream discussing princesses and princes. we had a blast!!

Fourth of July Weekend

We spent the weekend in Williamsburg at my in-laws and it was a fabulous time. My sister-in-law has two little boys too and they all love to hang out and play!! i love traveling to williamsburg and visiting the in-laws because it allows me to slow down and breathe through life even more- taking time to be fully present and enjoy each moment.

they played with the "crazy caterpillar" water toy

enjoyed ice cream outside

made wishes in the fountain- and almost fell in!!

played "construction site" and loved watching the guy mowing the lawn. owen is obsessed with lawn mowers right now.

mason teaching little cousin Luke to high-five.

i often get the question what do i do for food when i travel. well i often take it all with me. Half the car is packed with delicious food for me and everyone i'm eating with. i love introducing others to new foods and new ways of eating foods. my in-laws finally got a vitamix so i at least don't need to bring that. this trip i took:
produce to make green juice, kombucha teas, fruit for the boys, fermented veggies, sea veggies, avocados, greens for salads and some homemade treats such as:
my cheesy kale chips- my sister-in-laws husband loved these!!

my not-tuna pate which i wrapped in nori sheets and layered with arame and hiziki

my spinach flax wraps which i also ate with my not-tuna pate.

i always come prepared. on sunday night i was craving a cold ice cream treat- i indulged in vanilla coconut ice cream!! Delish!! many people ask "isn't it a pain to take all your food." the answer is no. i know that if i come prepared with "my foods" i will be fueling my body so i can always be satisfied and have optimal energy. its a no-brainer for me. namaste, kelly
