Everyone can benefit from detoxing at some level. Here are a few benefits of detoxing:
Benefits of Detoxing
• Improved Appearance - One of the key benefits of detoxing is just how much better you will look. Apart from reducing bloating, streamlining your body, and toning your muscles through the combination of diet and body therapies, your skin will be transformed. Expect your skin to look softer and better hydrated, your complexion to be clearer, and the condition of your hair and nails to improve significantly. There should be less puffiness under your eyes and the eyes themselves should be clearer and brighter. You’ll even find your teeth are brighter as you avoid discoloring tannins present in tea, coffee and red wine.
• Better Health - Detoxing improves the health of your immune system by increasing the amount of antioxidant nutrients that are key to fighting infection and disease. As a result, you’ll suffer from fewer colds and minor illnesses. If you’ve been suffering from a food intolerance without knowing it, you may even find that allergic disorders such as hay fever and eczema, as well as stomach cramps, diarrhea, and headaches, disappear once the offending item has been removed from your diet.
• Restful Sleep - Detoxing will help you sleep better because you will be eliminating so many harmful substances that have been keeping you awake. Many people use alcohol as a sedative, but in fact it is a stimulant in the same way as caffeine and tobacco, and will wake you up in the middle of the night. Regular exercise will also promote deeper sleep, but avoid anything too strenuous in the hours before bedtime.
• Improved mood and Inner Harmony - Ridding your mind of negative thoughts will improve your outlook and do wonders for your state of health. Research has shown that optimism and happiness are strongly linked to good health, increased well-being, and your body’s potential to heal itself. Healthy eating will stabilize your blood sugar levels, which in turn will prevent your moods from fluctuation, helping you to feel more relaxed and better able to deal with stress.
• Weight Loss - Anyone who regularly eats thousands of calories of fatty, sugary, and nutritionally unsound food a day will lose weight if they follow a detox program. However, weight loss is only an added bonus, not the main aim. Don’t be tempted to weigh yourself while detoxing because you might not feel motivated to carry on if you find you haven’t lost any weight.

How to use "Dressings"
ok- now i'm really ready for spring. it was toooooo cold outside this weekend. my boys and i were riding bikes and playing soccer outside on saturday and i felt like coming in for some hot tea after that!! we were bundled with red noses. but we had a great time!!! This whole weekend was a mommy weekend!! i loved every second: games, books, art projects, dancing to music, puzzles, play dates, yummy food, messy bath time and soooo much more...
one way to make eating veggies even more enjoyable and delicious, not to mention more nutritious too, is by adding nutrient-dense delicious dressings. i suggest you make a few big batches of different dressings per week and use them in a variety of ways.
This is a pesto that i often use in all the ways i mention below.....
here is the recipe:
CILANTRO WALNUT PESTO
2 cups fresh cilantro
1 cup fresh basil
1 cup walnuts, soaked
¾ cup olive oil
2 T lemon juice
2 T fresh sage
1 clove garlic
2 tsp celtic salt
½ tsp cayenne
Preparation:
Process all ingredients in a food processor with the “S” blade until smooth and creamy.
Here are some ideas for "how to use dressings":
-use on sprout salads mixed with fermented veggies
-use on green salads loaded with colorful veggies
-pour over kelp noodles, zucchini noodles and sea veggies to make a yummy "pasta-like" dish
-chop up dark leafy greens such as kale and dandelion greens, massage and marinate in lemon juice and sea salt, add dressing of choice and let marinate longer. you can use this as a side dish or add some sprouts and sprouted nuts/seeds to make it a meal.
-add dressings to any blended raw soup to add flavor
-drizzle dressings over an avocado or sweet potatoe
-add dressings to cooked or sprouted quinoa
-vary the thickness of a dressing by adding or decreasing the amount of liquid. make a thicker dressing or spread and use it on collard, nori or sprouted grain wraps.
one of my favorite combinations for a dressing is tahini, miso and nutritional yeast. try this recipe on or in any of the above:
1/4 cup water or liquid of choice (green juice, coconut water, or broth)
1 tbsp chick pea miso
1/3 cup tahini
1 clove crushed garlic
1 tsp grated ginger
1 tsp grated orange zest
1 tsp lemon or orange juice or combo of both
1 tbsp finely chopped parsley or cilantro
optional: 1 tbsp nutritional yeast
Whisk all the above together or process in food processor with S-blade.
Store dressings in mason jars. Most freshly made dressings can be stored for up to three days.
check out my new e-book, "Kelly's Raw: Simple Raw Recipes for Every Day Living" for more dressing ideas. It will be available early April, 2011!!!

Raw Vegan Sources of Calcium
what crazy weather!! i thought spring was here and today its like winter again. i was still at the parks today with boys. i feel its sooo important to let them get out and just run and play every day!! and i of course need to get out in nature every day too!!
This is my favorite brand of tahini- Rejuvenative Foods!! Tahini is ground up sesame seeds and is loaded with calcium.
This is a kale coleslaw that i make regularly that is packed with calcium- loads of kale and cabbage!! see below for recipe!!
over the years i've coached hundreds of clients in movement, nutrition and healthy living. one of the most often asked questions is, "if i'm not eating dairy products how do i get my calcium?" Well, it is possible to get enough calcium from a well organized raw vegan diet. even if you are not raw vegan include the below options in to your diet to increase your calcium intake.
One important thing to remember is that greens that are low in oxalic acids are excellent sources of calcium. Greens that are high in oxalic acids, such as spinach and swiss chard, are not good sources of calcium because the oxalates in them prevent calcium absorption.
Also, a diet too high in protein will cause the body to be too acidic and therefore, leach calcium (which is alkalizing), from the bones to neutralize the acid. So do not overdo your protein.
Here are some great raw vegan calcium sources:
Greens: kale, dandelion greens, collards, broccoli, parsley, watercress, turnip greens
Kelp: sprinkle kelp on salads and soups and include it in your smoothies
Carob: add a tbsp of carob to smoothies or make an avocado/carob pudding
Dulse: add a handful of dulse into your smoothies or include in dressings and sauces
Nuts/seeds: almonds, brazil nuts, pecans, cashews, sesame seeds
Choose nuts and seeds that are "sprouted". this means they have been soaked in water which release the enzyme inhibitors making them easier to digest. Make sprouted tahini (ground up sesame seeds) a regular part of your diet.
Fruits: olives, dried apricots and figs, raisens, black currants, dates, and prunes
add dates to smoothies for sweetness, add olives to salads and sandwiches
vegetables: green beans, napa cabbage, cabbage, celery, carrots, sweet potato, rutabaga
A great calcium snack is a fig with an almond in it and a drizzle of tahini!!! yummy!!
If you want to make sure you get enough calcium daily you can take a "whole food" calcium supplement such as Garden of Life or Mega Foods brands.
Stock up on all the above and you will get your daily calcium needs met!! enjoy!!
Kale Coleslaw Recipe
Dressing:
1 tbsp freshly squeezed orange juice
1 tbsp light miso
2 tsp flaxseed oil
1 ½ tsp organic raw honey or date syrup or sweetener of choice (optional)
1 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp ground flaxseeds
1 clove garlic, crushed
Pinch of powdered mustard
Salad:
2 cups kale leaves cut into thin ribbons
1 ¼ cups shredded cabbage
1 large ripe tomato, seeded and drained, diced
2 tbsp red onion, diced
Pinch of cayenne
Pinch of sea salt
For the dressing, combine all of the dressing ingredients in a large bowl and whisk until well blended.
Add the kale to the dressing and toss. Massage the kale well for a few minutes to soften. The kale should take on a cooked appearance and reduce dramatically in volume.
Add the cabbage, tomato, onion, cayenne and salt and toss again.
Kale coleslaw is best served immediately, but it can also be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.

My Daily Green Juice Recipe
i walk around every day with my mason jar filled with green "stuff" as many call it. i'm always asked what it is. i love sharing because i want to inspire every one to drink green "stuff" every day- and make it nutritious and delicious!! basically it is just all the greens and sprouts that i have plus apple, lemon and ginger to make it taste amazing and fresh!!
here are approximate amounts:
3 stalks celery
1/2 cucumber
1-3 apples (optional and dependent on how sweet you like your juice)
loads of sprouts: sunflower, broccoli, alfalfa etc...
handful of each: cilantro, parsley and dandelion greens (all very cleansing)
handful of each: romaine, chard, kale, beet greens, napa cabbage, bok choy or any other organic greens that are fresh at the market that week.
Using Juicer: chop all ingredients into small pieces and juice- i like to add lemon juice and grated ginger fresh at the end.
Using Vitamix Blender: Add ¼ cup of water at bottom of blender. Add ingredients to blender one at a time in the order above and blend each. Use nutmilk bag to strain fiber from juice.
Add lemon juice and grated ginger.
i make approximately 60 ounces a day. i use some as a base for my kid's smoothies.
i often add green powders to the juice to make it amazingly nutritious- wheatgrass powder, pure synergy and spirulina are the regular green powders i use.
i crave my green juice every day. drinking green juice is one of the best things you can do for your health. Drink up!!
i'm off to my yoga workshop all day!!

Nutritious and Delicious New Products!!
What an amazingly beautiful day!! Warm, fresh and springy!!
If you have not tried coconut vinegar and coconut aminos you have to try them and incorporate them into your diet. there are many health benefits of both and they taste fabulous!! Check out the website here.
i used the coconut aminos to make owen and I's lunch today:
i lightly warmed kelp noodles, arame and hijiki in a sauce pan and transferred it to our bowls. i drizzled it with hemp oil, dash of sea salt, loads of nutritional yeast and a few drizzles of coconut aminos. we ate this with loads of my crunchy kale chips!! So satisfying, nutritious and delicious!!
owen ate this while finishing his smoothie from this morning which included: my daily green juice as the base, fresh organic mango, scoop of sun warrior vanilla protein powder, bee pollen and hemp seeds. He was covered in kale chips with a green ring around him mouth- wish i had a pic!!
Today's Journal:

I feel very GRATEFUL!!
it was another beautiful day. the sun was shining with a little cool breeze!! perfect for playing at the park.
i love watching the kids just run and play and be soooo FREE, in FLOW and in the MOMENT!! They laugh. They run. They make friends so easily. we should all live life as kids do(at least some times!!).
today was the post-detox workshop for all my Buddha B detoxers!! they did fabulous!! congrats to you all. as i said to the group today, "conscious eating is a journey." we are all on our own journey. so take one day at a time and be present with each decision you make.
i feel grateful for so many things today:
-grateful to have a career that is creative, inspiring and that truly gives me purpose in this world and gives back to the world.
-grateful to have two amazing little boys that teach me about being present and living in the moment every day. (and who of course give me even more purpose in this world!!)
-grateful to have a mother who would do anything for me and my kids and who loves and cherishes every moment spent with us!! and i cherish every moment with her.
-grateful just to be alive with so many choices every day. The ability to reach out and hug my kids and say thank you to my mom for just being who she is.
Remember, we are only here for a short time and we truly need to make the most of every moment. say and do the things you want to do. never hold back and never waste a minute. life is too short and too precious!!
Sincerely, kelly

Detox Day 8
what a beautiful afternoon. check out the pics of my guys riding bike:
i'm very excited to get on the bike trails with mason this spring and summer!!
owen is using a "balance" bike. these are fabulous. both owen and mason used it to learn how to ride bike. it is a bike without pedals that helps them improve their balance and control for riding a bike with pedals. it is amazing and totally works. literally the second time mason got on his bike with pedals he was riding like a pro!! now its owen's turn to learn.
I had an amazing wellness day today.
slept in (till 5:45 at least)
water / probiotic
kombucha tea while making green juice for the day
yoga class at Yoga Fusion
drank rest of kombucha, pau d'arco tea
Bodywork/massage session from 12-1:30. i highly recommend getting regular bodywork done. there are just some things we can't do through exercise/movement etc. getting regular body work done now will prevent issues and injuries in the future. i do not believe this is just something extra to get done. this is essential to the balance of the mind and body. For me it is my time to breathe, be silent and just visualize the area she is working on to get the most benefit possible. i suggest you find someone that you see regularly so that they get to know your body and what it needs.
green juice plus supplements
green juice plus wheatgrass powder and pure synergy powder
park with kids and mom all day
out to dinner with mom and kids- did not eat at dinner
lots of yummy juicy sweet mangos
sipping on kombucha tea now
will meditate and relax very soon!!
here is owen eating all my kale chips!!!

Detox Day 7
above are kelp noodles that i included in my mid-day meal.
happy friday!!
my daily nutrition:
wake
tongue scrape
yoga
water/probiotic
kombucha
pau d'arco tea
shopping at moms for all my ingredients to make kale chips and to get weekend groceries
gave lecture to a group of moms regarding proper posture and optimal exercises to do on a daily basis. i love working with other moms. Owen had a blast running around with the other kids!!
11:45ish green juice with supplements
green juice with pure synergy and wheatgrass powder
owen and i made kale chips- he loves eating them before i even put them in the dehydrator!!! i never say no to this!!
owen and i did not mommy and me yoga- he has a wonderful downward facing dog. i'm fascinated by watching him and all babies move naturally. they have an energy and freedom of movement that gets lost as we become adults. i challenge everyone to really watch babies move and try to move more like them!!!
3:00 kelp noodles and arame lightly heated in a saute pan with a little olive oil. sprinkled a topping of ground up sprouted sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast and sea salt on top. this was a very warming meal. this is not an ideal "detox" meal because it includes two different fats- fats from the olive oil and fats from the sunflower seeds. but it was fabulous!!! owen ate lots too!! then we munched on more undone kale chips.
sipping on kombucha tea while writing this.
my mom is visiting so i will spend time with her tonight.

Detox Day 6
Here is a fabulous recipe that i shared with a client today to help her eat more sea veggies:
The above picture is a slightly different version that includes raw fermented sauerkraut and soaked sea spaghetti without the mungbean sprouts. The key is to combine sea veggies, sprouts and maybe greens with the fabulous dressing of tahini, miso and water. simple, yummy and sooo nutrient-dense!!!
These are the luna nori crackers i love by lydia's organics.
ARAME SPROUT SALAD
1/2 bag arame- soaked 10-15 minutes and rinsed
1 box sunflower sprouts
add a handful of any other sprouts you want: broccoli, alfalfa etc.
1 large handful mung bean sprouts
1 large tbsp tahini
1 tbsp chickpea miso- South River Co.
water (dependent upon how thick you want the sauce)
optional: add a handful of greens
Whisk together tahini, miso and water (if you want a thicker sauce add less water)
Place arame and sprouts in bowl and mix with dressing.
i also like to add spirulina to the dressing or sprinkle it on top of the salad!!
Enjoy this salad by itself, on dehydrated crackers, wrapped in romaine or collard leaves, wrapped in nori or place it on green salads or sprout salads. Its also yummy with raw fermented sauerkraut.
i love eating this salad with Lydia's Organic Luna Nori Crackers!!!
Today's Nutrition:
i store everything in different size mason jars. the other glass is the glass i love to drink all my smoothies and juices from and even eat my raw vegan ice creams from!!
wake
tongue scrape
yoga- fabulous early morning flow!! i love my early morning practice. it is still dark outside and there is not a sound in the house. with two little boys this does not happen during light hours. it is sooo peaceful and calming!! it is the best way to start my day.
water and probiotic
drank kombucha while working with clients
yoga class- fabulous flow at the yoga fusion studio
green juice with supplements
green juice with wheatgrass powder and pure synergy powder
sipped on green juice while with clients from late morning till mid afternoon
2:30ish box of organic strawberries
3:15ish green smoothie including raspberries, spinach, chard and vanilla sun warrior protein.
3:45ish 2 organic oranges
worked with more clients till 7
sipping on kombucha tea while doing work in office now
meditation and deep breathing and long shower are on the agenda for tonight.
my plan for tomorrow is to make lots of yummy kale chips!! i'm looking forward to it!! namaste ,kelly

Detox Day 5
in my daily yoga practice i challenge myself with arm balance postures!!! i challenge you to choose at least one thing every day to do that challenges you. it could be a physical exercise, eating a new food, experimenting with new food preparation techniques, taking a new exercise class etc. it could even be just relaxing (it can be challenging to just relax in this go go go world!!).
it was another very simple eating day for me. days that i'm busy i want as much energy as possible to put towards the things i'm doing so eating light is perfect. my day today was really just like yesterday.
wake
tongue scrape
yoga
water/probiotic
kombucha

Detox Day 4
Here are some fun recent pics from our playdate on friday:
owen bouncing!!
mason bouncing!!
we had sooo much fun bouncing on the trampoline!! remember bouncing on a trampoline or "rebounding" is fabulous for detoxing because it gets the lymphatic system flowing and therefore, the body functioning properly. you can buy a small rebounder for daily home use. ideally you want to rebound approximately 10 minutes per day. i highly suggest investing in a rebounder and adding this to your daily rituals.
Feeling fabulous today. i honestly did not like doing the Garden of Life Raw Cleanse. i much prefer just keeping it simple and eating simple clean foods and drinks. today was very simple:
wake
tongue scrape
yoga
water, probiotic
kombucha
yoga class
11:00 bodywork- one hour massage
12:00 green juice and supplements- multi, b-12, b-complex, vit c, d3
green juice with pure synergy and wheatgrass powder all afternoon
saw clients all afternoon followed by meeting
4 mangos over 1.5 hours chewed very well- they were soooo delish!!
i'm drinking a ginger kombucha tea right now
this is the type of day that just gives me loads of energy!! i feel light, energetic and vibrant!!

Detox Day 3
i'm sooo proud of everyone. i'm getting some fabulous daily menu plans!! i love the energy that every one is putting into this detox program. many of you are finding solutions to fitting this way of eating into your daily lifestyle. this is the key!!
i posted my answers to some questions i received today on the buddha b blog so check it out.
if you have been following along you all know that i've been experimenting with the Garden of Life Raw Cleanse kit this detox. i'm typically not a fan of using additional supplements/ pills/ powders during a detox but i wanted to experiment. i'm going to change it up a little and not do the Garden of Life Raw Cleanse for the next three days and see how i feel. i plan on going extremely simple the next 3 days and then possibly start it again and see how i feel. so the plan for the next three days will be basically Green Juice all morning (after yoga of course) till mid-afternoon and then fresh fruit such as mango chunks or blended cantaloupe or possibly a small blended green smoothie- we'll see how the days progress.
today's menu included:
wake
tongue scrape
yoga
water/lemon/probiotic
kombucha while making green juice
9:30ish
Garden of Life detox powder
Garden of Life detox capsules
Green Juice with supplements
Green Juice plus wheat grass powder and pure synergy powder
Sipped on green juice while working with Raw Food/Yoga client at my house all morning
total green juice approx 50ounces
2ish
Garden of Life detox capsules
Blended Green Energy Soup- I love this soup. see below for recipe!! i demoed it today during my session with my client. i added nutritional yeast and sprinkles of sea lettuce and then dipped lydia's organic luna nori raw dehydrated crackers into it. i added a little sprinkle of nutritional yeast to almost every bite. This was a very satisfying little meal. Owen ate it all up with me too. he was green by the end of the meal!!
dry skin brush, shower
Sipping on ginger kombucha tea while i write this
meditation/deep breathing is the plan for tonight
Here is the recipe for the GARDEN BLEND SOUP
¾ cup purified water
¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice, or ½ orange, coarsely chopped
3-4 cups chopped kale leaves, packed (or any dark leafy greens)
½ apple, chopped, or ½ small cucumber, peeled and chopped
¼ cup fresh cilantro or basil leaves. Or fresh dill weed, packed
1 ½ tbsp light miso
1 ½ tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ clove garlic
Pinch of cayenne pepper
½ green onion (optional)
¼ cup sunflower seeds, soaked for 1 hour, rinsed, and drained or ½ ripe avocado, coarsely chopped
¼ cup mung bean sprouts or sprouts of choice
Sprinkle of pumpkin seeds
Preparation:
Combine water, orange juice, kale, apple, cilantro, miso, lemon juice, garlic, cayenne, green onion (in this order) in a blender and process until smooth.
Add the sunflower seeds or avocado and process until smooth.
Garnish each serving with some sprouts and pumpkin seeds.
Variations:
Use a variety of vegetables: bell peppers, celery, cucumber, tomato, romaine lettuce, spinach, zucchini.
In cool weather to warm the soup you can use hot water, blend the soup longer or place in dehydrator.
Enjoy and Namaste, kelly

Detox Day 2
It was a fabulous rainy almost spring day. I love rainy days sometimes- especially on sundays!! Hope all my detoxers are doing well. Today was organization/preparation day so by now you should all have your food and plan ready to go- but if not you still have time. it is a process and each of you are on your own path.
i love this image. all my detoxers this week are from the Buddha B Yoga studio. it is a fabulous new studio owned by my friend and colleague Valerie. check it out at www.buddhabyoga.com
to me the combination of being a yogi and the raw living foods lifestyle are profound- it is what allows me to thrive every day!!
here is my day today:
wake
home yoga practice
water/lemon/probiotic
6ish-drank kombucha while made green juice for the day
8ish-studio for meeting and phone consult with client
10ish- Garden of Life toxin defense packet/ water
Garden of Life organ detox capsules-3
Green Juice with supplements
10:30-11:30ish Green Juice with wheatgrass powder and pure synergy powder
Total green juice about 50 ounces
Today's Green Juice ingredients almost exactly like yesterdays with some arugula and red leaf lettuce too.
Grocery shopping with kids to moms and whole foods. I always make the 2 stops to get everything i need. this is always an adventure with the kids!!!
1:30ish
Garden of Life organ detox capsules- 3
Nori rolls with the following inside: clover, broccoli and alfalfa sprouts, raw fermented sauerkraut and carrots, sprinkles of dulse, kelp and sea lettuce, nutritional yeast, avocado, red pepper and radishes. i ate it in burrito form while preparing food for the boys and cleaning up.
Activity with boys all afternoon.
3:30 1/2 ginger kombucha tea
4:15 16 ounces of water blended with 2 large scoops sun warrior raw fermented brown rice vanilla protein powder
dry skin brush, shower
6:15ish
12 ounces of water blended with Garden of Life Digestion and Elimination powder
later i will have the rest of my kombucha tea
i also plan on meditating, deep breathing and setting my intentions for tomorrow.
Feeling fabulous. i love eating light. what is tough for me is to sit down while eating. i'm constantly doing something for the boys, cleaning up etc. i'm still conscious of my food and chew each bite to the max- which is why it takes me sooo long to eat. You can't be perfect at everything and you need to find ways to make your ideal lifestyle work with your real life schedule.
happy detoxing. namaste, kelly
